There are a number of ways to find that country house you have always dreamed of so below are some links to help your search.  For a more general browse, I would still recommend getting acquainted with the property adverts which are always at the front of Country Life magazine (also a good way of seeing which properties re-appear and therefore may be proving harder to sell).

Estate Agents

The primary route is still to visit the large estate agents with a dedicated country house department – though be aware that local estate agents do sometimes get the instruction.  Agents listed below are ordered according to my subjective impression of who has had the most and best adverts in Country Life magazine and whose website doesn’t annoy me when trying to search specifically for country houses and estates:

Knight Frank: country houses currently for sale

Savills: country houses currently for sale

Strutt & Parker: country houses currently for sale – (England-only results; S&P website doesn’t search all UK)

Carter Jonas: country houses currently for sale

Jackson-Stops: country houses currently for sale

Scotland specific:

CKD Galbraith: country houses currently for sale

Rettie: country houses currently for sale

Buying Agents

The other key way to find a country house which meets your requirements is to engage the services of a buying agent who can do the searching on your behalf. They naturally work in a more discrete manner and often purchase houses on behalf of clients without the houses ever going near to the estate agents. This is an advantage if you are seeking to buy a specific house which may not even be on the market, or where the owners or buyers are looking for maximum discretion.
