There are a number of ways to find that country house you have always dreamed of so below are some links to help your search. For a more general browse, I would still recommend getting acquainted with the property adverts which are always at the front of Country Life magazine (also a good way of seeing which properties re-appear and therefore may be proving harder to sell).

The primary route is still to visit the large estate agents with a dedicated country house department – though be aware that local estate agents do sometimes get the instruction. Agents listed below are ordered according to my subjective impression of who has had the most and best adverts in Country Life magazine and whose website doesn’t annoy me when trying to search specifically for country houses and estates:
Knight Frank: country houses currently for sale (be warned that the although KF do helpfully include short links in the Country Life adverts, they often aren’t live on the day of publication – odd, I know)
Savills: country houses currently for sale
Strutt & Parker: country houses currently for sale
Carter Jonas: country houses currently for sale
CKD Galbraith: country houses currently for sale
- Chesterton Humberts: their website doesn’t support looking for just country houses and estates.
- Hamptons: irritating; search limited as it only recognises counties where they have an office but doesn’t mention this so just looks broken if you search for others. Does have a ‘country house‘ department but, as the search is poor, the only way to view properties is via an online magazine.
- Jackson-Stops: for an agency with a good ‘heritage’ reputation, it’s frustrating they can’t be added to the list above as their website neither has a specific search for country houses and although they can be found through a search (though it’s not easy), it’s not possible to copy the link.
- Winkworth: they have a specific department but it’s not really country houses, more houses that happen to be in a more rural location.
If any agency would like me to come in and help with their websites, just let me know.
The other key way to find a country house which meets your requirements is to engage the services of a buying agent who can do the searching on your behalf. They naturally work in a more discrete manner and often purchase houses on behalf of clients without the houses ever going near to the estate agents. This is an advantage if you are seeking to buy a specific house which may not even be on the market, or where the owners or buyers are looking for maximum discretion.
